Welcome to our Spanish page!
Intent
Here at Christ Church, our school’s aim is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about modern languages, predominantly Spanish. Learning a second language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, key individuals and cultural differences. The intention is that pupils will feel able and encouraged to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2 and ultimately be working towards becoming life-long language learners.
Implementation
At school, we use the Primary Languages Network resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad and vibrant modern languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. The Primary Languages Network is a creative and dynamic programme where learners engage in written and spoken language learning opportunities. Phonics and grammar are a fundamental part of the programme.
The four key language learning skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across Key Stage 2. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning and to give children inspiration to pursue languages in their career choices.
Our children are supported in a variety of ways:
Though ML is not a statutory subject in Key Stage 1, the children explore languages through songs and games in Spanish to excite and enthuse them about language learning. Towards the end of Year 2, teachers will teach basic Spanish skills. The intent of this is to ensure an efficient transition between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Knowledge Organisers
Integral to our high-quality curriculum, children use knowledge organisers to help develop a deeper understanding and to perform increasingly complex skills. Introduced at the beginning of a topic, we use them as a point of reference throughout to help children gain, retain and build the knowledge and skills as set out in our well sequenced Spanish curriculum.

In the Infants, our children will practise their Spanish speaking skills throughout the week. This also happens in the Juniors, in addition to opportunities during each Spanish lesson. Below are videos of some of our children's fantastic speaking and conversation skills!
